TROOP 354 JULY – AUGUST 2011 CALENDAR

Several Scouts are working on possible Eagle projects. We will inform you of project dates after the projects are approved by the Eagle Project Board of Review. This is a 2 page calendar.

July

Monday 4 Fourth of July Parade (DMACC Parking Lot. 8:45 am): All Scouts and Leaders are invited to walk in the 4th of July Parade. You must wear your Scout uniform. We will meet at the DMACC Parking lot at 8:45 am for the Parade.

The Parade will begin and end at DMACC. All boys who walk in the Parade with the Troop or play in the band will receive community service hours for advancement. Let your son know where to find you before the Parade or pick him up at DMACC promptly when he completes the route.

10 - 16 Boy Scout Summer Camp (Camp Wakonda near Central City, IA): READ THIS CAREFULLY IF YOU HAVE A BOY GOING TO CAMP! We have many experienced leaders and older Scouts who will work very hard to make sure that your son has a great time at camp. We always work toward our mission of helping you to raise fine sons with high moral standards, leadership skills, and a desire to begin a lifetime of service to others.

Parents, I need your help in visiting with your son about the following: (1) Scouts are to be courteous and kind to all other Scouts at camp. Calling other Scouts names, using profanity, fighting, or damaging other's property is not acceptable behavior. We are at camp to have fun, but never at the expense of others. (2) Gambling is not allowed at Scout Camp. (3) The following items will not be allowed for boys at Scout Camp: cell phones, lighters, pornographic materials, electronic devices of any kind, electronic games, firecrackers, and any other devices designed to make the lives of other Scouts miserable. (4) Encourage him to treat the others the way he wants to be treated. We expect all Scouts to not talk above a whisper after lights out and to stop all talking within the next half hour or extra duties will be assigned. Otherwise, he may be calling you to explain his misdeeds under my supervision or to arrange to come home early. (5) Please take time to talk to talk to your son about the positive experiences he will have at camp. Visit with him about your own great camping experiences as a young person. Talk to him about taking showers and brushing his teeth daily. Make clear that he is going for the entire week and that coming home during the week is not an option. No leader will allow a Scout to use a cell phone to call home or to use the camp phone. I will not allow Scouts to call home. I will call in cases of emergency only. Homesickness is not an emergency.

Pre-camp Preparation: I will provide a list of requirements that must be completed before camp if your son is

to finish his merit badges at camp. Also, included is a list of what he needs to bring for each merit badge. You may email what he has completed to me before camp or hand me a note stating that requirements have been completed and signed by a parent in the parking lot before we leave.

What to bring: Tents, cots, and mattresses will be provided. I recommend bringing your clothes in a water proof plastic tub to keep them dry until they are used. Boys need to bring the following items to Scout Camp: Board game or card game (Do not forget this!), Scout uniform, a personal first aid kit, Troop 354 tee shirt (if you have one), shoes (absolutely no sandals or open toed shoes are allowed), rain wear, shirts, pants, shorts, 6 pairs of underwear, 7 pairs of socks (change socks at least once a day to prevent blisters), foot powder, moleskin for treating blisters, handkerchiefs, pajamas, sweatshirts, a warm jacket, swim trunks, soap, 4 washcloths, 4 towels, comb, toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, insect repellent (no aerosols [pump only] & never use in your tent), ball cap, sunscreen lotion, sleeping bag or 3 blankets, a long sheet to keep the mosquitoes of at night, Boy Scout Handbook, school bag, laundry bag, small pillow, flash light with extra batteries, $25-30 of spending money in an envelope with your son's name and the amount of money on the front (we will collect the money, lock it up, and hand it out as needed), and personal medications in their original containers. Mark your son's name in his uniform, Troop tee shirts, and other clothing with a permanent marker (all Troop shirts look identical without this identification). If you bring snacks they must be in labeled coolers which will be locked in the trailer at night. Don't ever eat your snacks in your tents or raccoons will wake you up several times each night.
